Chicago Tribune Endorsement for Illinois House

5th District: Republican newcomer Collin Johnson lives in the South Loop and spends most days inside Chicago public high schools overseeing a tutoring program. He is running against Rep. Ken Dunkin in a district that hugs Lake Michigan from the Gold Coast almost to 95th Street. Worried about gun violence? Not Dunkin. He derailed sensible legislation this year that would have tightened sentencing guidelines for some serious firearm offenses. He has supported raising his own pay, but he voted to weaken charter schools, which give Chicago kids more choices for education. Dunkin wanted to keep the widely abused legislative scholarship program. And he votes against most measures that would rein in state spending. Johnson would allow the income tax to roll back as promised and supports giving children and parents more options for schools. Johnson is endorsed.
